JIM EFFLER -American
Jim is a painter living in Cincinnati, Ohio. He has had a very successful career as an illustrator, primarily known for working in airbrush. In 2003, he decided to focus his attention on oil painting, something he had done occasionally since graduating from the Art Academy of Cincinnati in 1978. He is enthusiastic about plein air landscape painting, and also enjoys portraiture. His style is impressionistic realism, influenced by artists including Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida, Anders Zorn and John Singer Sargent.
Jim works in oils; they work best for this style because of their slow drying time. Composition and color harmony are very important to his paintings. For most of his career, his style has been very tight and detailed. Now he wants it to be loose but with control, implying the detail without actually rendering all of it. Now his goal is to capture the essence of the subject quickly, and to avoid overworking a piece.
Jim is a member of the Cincinnati Art Club and was elected to its board in May of 2006. He is the current chair for the Cincinnati Art Club's ViewPoint exhibit, a national, juried show. He is a regular at the Art Club critiques, and believes there should be no end to learning. Jim exhibits and sells his paintings at the Art Club's gallery and restaurants and coffeehouses in Ohio. He is represented in Florida at Newbill Collection by the Sea, in Seaside. Jim has won many awards for his artwork. He has also taught at three colleges.
In 2007, Jim illustrated his 12th Bockfest poster, 7 of which were oil paintings. Bockfest, revived from Cincinnati's past, is a Renaissance celebration of Bock beer, bockwurst and the coming of spring. Creating the poster for this annual event offers him the opportunity to combine his love of painting with other interests, German heritage, beer and animals ("bock" means "goat" in German).
