My name is Deborah Fiyinfoluwa Segun. I am a Nigerian multi disciplinary artist currently based in Lagos, Nigeria. I recently graduated with a degree in fashion design from Polimoda institute in Florence, Italy. Even though I had studied art and design in the past I didn’t start practising till 2016, when I was inspired by my first collection of hand painted garments and sculptures inspired by research I did on the female emotion and anatomy.
I mostly specialise in paintings and graphic illustrations. I employ the use of shapes and lines to create unusual compositions. I work a lot with portraits but I also like to observe objects around me and focus on the shapes they create, combining them together to change their function and form something new. I take a fauvist approach with colours in my work, as I don’t like to paint things as they are, by being experimental with the colours I am creating a new story behind the subject. A lot of my work is inspired by the cubist movement, with a focus on altering the silhouettes of objects or people around me, playing with proportions through the abstraction and use of exaggerated shapes to bring to life this non realistic and animated world, that I have created in my mind, Inspired by experiences from my physical reality.
