Iwao Akiyama 秋山巌 (1921 – 2014)
Born in Oita, Kyushu. He studied oil painting at Taiheiyo Art School, graduating in 1956. He turned to printmaking after studying with woodblock master Shiko Munakata from 1959 - 1965. The artist is known for his quaint images of animals and human figures. Akiyama prints on thin, but coarse, long-fibered Japanese paper. His prints are in the collections of major museums including the National Museum of England – London, National Art Museum in Victoria - Australia, Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art – Israel, and the Cincinnati Art Museum.
