Artist Statement
"My work is abstract, themes taken from anywhere and everywhere on our world. The textures of place, blurry reflections of water and algae, the overlapping clash of colour that somehow melded together in a local’s rust-eaten door. Texture and colour, as they relate to specific objects or places is the concept and theme of my work. Trained as a texture artist at Laguna College of Art and Design, I took my experience of how to ‘see’ and translated it into 3-d, traditional work. Now, instead of working graphically with a stylus and tablet, I work on wood panel, layering colour, texture, and medium. The surface is hidden and exposed through the techniques of ‘conceal and reveal’; using various tools and implements for expressive texture and mark-making into, through, and on top of my materials. These include the basics of oil and cold wax, as well as Venetian plaster, marble dust, natural pigment mined from Birmingham Alabama and Copper Hill Mine in Tennessee, oil sticks, crushed seashells, dry pigments from Cyprus, powdered French minerals, and rich colour obtained from semi-precious stones. And yet even this is not a complete list, as there is always something new to be discovered when working with textures.
From the microscope view of rock to the full and complete sensory feast of a specific place and time, my work is fully inspired by what I have seen and where I have been. Sometimes the most gratifying experience is to find that ‘one’ amongst a sea of texture, that stands out and captures the spirit of a place. Capturing shape and light, from the smallest detail or the most primary, intrinsic atmosphere of place is my primary guiding image. As a lover of history, I often find inspiration walking through antiquity museums and historical sites, one in particular being the San Juan National Historic Site, with its rough, functional stone walls in creams and ochres, peering high above the ocean and the smoother, sun baked cannons, black and fierce against the neutral, unassuming rocks. All of these being translated into my work, allowing the viewer to experience through colour and texture, the place, the object, the discovery."
