Arryn is a ceramic artist, and an essential oils enthusiast. She is married to her husband, Andrew, and they have three children. Clay is her passion: she loves being a potter. Arryn has always had a passion for the arts growing up. She studied ceramics at Houghton College where she received her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts. It was at Houghton that she started to explore the crystalline glaze technique and made that her independent study. She has been working with crystalline glazes specifically for 7 years now.
The process of this particular glazing technique has both intrigued and challenged her. She says that during a complicated 22 hour firing cycle, the kiln will hold at 2012 degrees for up to four hours. At this held temperature, the crystals mature and can grow as large as 12cm in diameter.
What Arryn loves most about ceramics is how closely it relates to creation. She says that she can do one hundred firings and never get the same crystal formation twice: much like in nature, you will never find an exact duplicate. In all that she does, whether she is running errands, with her children, in the studio, or building her essential oils business, she says she want to glorify God in her work and in her life.
“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all for the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31
