The Senufo live in the Ivory Coast, Ghana and Mali. They are primarily farmers but they occasionally hunt. Their masks are used for a variety of rituals for their society known as Poro. This mask is a Kpelie it is used in Poro initiations. The protuberances on the face are meant to remind the initiates of human imperfections. It reminds us no one is perfect and we need to look inside to see the real person.
