Description

Lizzie Black Kander was elected president of the Ladies Relief Sewing Society in 1894. Women were taught sewing, darning, mending, crocheting, embroidery, painting, and drawing. Through her cooperation with the Milwaukee Jewish Mission, in 1900 she helped establish a settlement house on North 5th Street. Her work with women continued through cooking classes. Open to all immigrants, the women worked and learned together, eventually creating a cookbook in 1901. This cookbook took on a life of its own, has survived through several editions, and has brought healthy meals to families for over 100 years. Here is a depiction of Lizzie with one of her classic creations, “Sunshine Cake.”
