Description

Finely carved Japanese panel taken from a temple Ramna or door transom usually found above an alter. Carved of Keyaki wood (Japanese red elm wood) two tigers run through a bamboo grove. The tiger and the bamboo have a symbiotic relationship in nature; the bamboo providing a place of shelter for the tigers while the tigers assure that no one will come to harvest the bamboo. This came to symbolize the relationship between the powerful (samurai) and the powerless (the peasants and farmers). These parables would serve as a reminder to every one that each would not survive without the other. Late 19th century Dimensions: 13" high x 46" wide x 6" deep
