Description

A pair of Japanese sugi do painted cryptomeria wood doors. The doors with large painted floating panels within a black lacquer sugi (cryptomeria) wood frame. The surface left in its natural state and painted with gesso (Gofun) and mineral paints. One side depicting a tranquil landscape scene with flowering branches arching over a small waterfall along the rocky banks of a river or pond. The reverse painted with the traditionally Chinese subject of the seven sages of the bamboo grove. The doors originally used as sliding doors in front of a storage space or as part of the tokowaki, or side display area, of a tokonoma (display alcove). Meiji Period (1868 1912). 70" high x 72" wide.
