The chess set of carved hardwood, some inset with white metal. The knights of traditional okir form, described as a serpent or representation of the wind or a tropical storm and symbol of good luck. Introduced to the Philippines as early as the 16th century, the game of chess endures today as a favorite pastime. Early 20th century. 25.75" long x 26.5" wide x 5.5" deep.
