Albrecht Ourer (1471-1528) German "Madonna Crowned By Two Angels' Engraving Ourer produced this engravi in 1518 -it was only one of two that he made during the period between 1514 and 151.9. The Virgin wears a crown of rosebuds and is holding an apple. The apple represents the origlnal sin of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. There are portents of the future of this beautiful child not only in the apple but also in the fencing behind the Virgin. Its construction is very much like that of the Crown of Thoms. Ourer believed, according to his writings, that man had a duty to think and meditate on Christ's example, that the essence of Christianity laid not in the ceremony or ritual but in the individual to forge his own direct relationship with God. He gives us a very human scene -a serene, lovely woman holding her playful child -Jesus is holding onto the neck of her dress -but he contrasts this against the stark reality of what lies ahead for both of them.
