About the Artist Born in Lund in 1879 as the son of a baker, Johan Johansson was initially schooled in decorative painting and between 1899 and 1914 he traveled to study painting throughout Germany and in Paris. His work was initially most strongly influenced by impressionism, then German Expressionism, while in Paris he came under other influences of the modern movement. But it is said that his travels and studies in Italy from 1920 - 1922 had the strongest impact on his later work. Johan Johansson became a member of the artists' group The Twelve ("De Tolv") in Lund upon its founding in 1924 and until its dissolution in 1934. Subsequently, he was a member of the larger artists' group called Color and Shape (Färg och Form) in Stockholm. He died in Lund in 1951.
