This striking Modernist painting is an important historical work of art.
It is a scarce view of the now extinct Old Coast Guard Station on the shore of Lake Michigan, Milwaukee. It was the only such station known in the entire world done in the Prairie School style - a simple but period design. This view, likely 1930's, as seen from the east/ lake view.
Scene includes a metal tower looming right, dark, rigid figures walking in front of the buildings, but each distinctly mirroring the vertical structure of the building. The trees and clouds add to the appeal of the view, those trees disappearing sometime after this was painted. The Coast Guard Building later became the site of historic events, and various organizations, but fell into disrepair over the decades. It was torn down in 2008.
The watercolor is signed Redell in the lower right corner, and is undated.
It views approx 12" x 21" with newer frame a
