Peter Max (b. 1937, German American) “Umbrella Man” (2016) Serigraph in color on wove paper from the Peter Max Studio. Hand signed by the iconic Pop artist and numbered as an Hors Commerce (not for sale) proof (HC 35/100) in the lower margin. (There is a regular edition of 495 as well as additional limited editions, including AP, MP and others.) Embossed with the “Peter Max Copyright” seal in the lower left margin. The image measures 12 x 9.25 inches, and with full margins, matting and frame, it is 31.75 x 28.5 inches with plexiglass. “Umbrella Man” is an example of Max’s surreal, unconscious, dreamlike imagery. It has been said that the story behind this series is that the artist was inspired by a photo of two men walking away from the camera with one man, the famous cellist Pablo Casals, holding the umbrella for his friend Pablo Picasso. Max drew only one of the figures: the man with the umbrella who was doing the work! Provenance: Park West Gallery with Certificate of Authe
