Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) “Untitled” - This reproduction is a limited edition (2/150) lithograph with a printed signature and moniker of Basquiat in the margin. It is based on the original 6 by 5.7-foot oil-stick, acrylic and spray paint on canvas that was created by the artist in 1982. The unframed sheet measures approximately 20.5 x 18.25 inches. The work of art is likely a self-portrait and depicts a skull-like head with bared teeth against a bright blue background with spray-painted graffiti-like scrawls. It is notable that this is one of the artist’s first painted canvases, because 1982 was the first year that Basquiat was painting in a studio with financial backing, having previously been drifting and working as a street artist.
Basquiat’s original painting broke records when it sold for $110.5 million at a Sotheby’s auction in 2017. In 1984, the original purchasers of the painting paid $19,000 for it.
