“Rattlesnake” is a bronze reproduction sculpture after the original of the same name (circa 1904-1905) by American Western artist Frederic Sackrider Remington (American, 1861-1909). This equestrian sculpture depicts a cowboy holding his hat and clinging to a bucking horse that is rearing away from a small but dangerous snake below. This piece is mounted to an oval shaped black stone platform that bears a plaque reading ‘Rattlesnake By Frederic Remington’. The statue measures approximately 9” x 8” x 5” and weighs 7.2 pounds.
Rattlesnake was Remington’s 12th sculpture and has been described as one of his best, his own favorite, as well as one of his most popular. Notable details of the work include the movement of the rearing and twisting horse recoiling from the deadly, venomous snake, the rider being lifted up from the saddle, the cowboy’s textured woolly chaps, and the man’s moustache.
