(After) Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960 – 1988) Untitled (Black Skull) - This reproduction is a limited edition (11/150) lithograph with the printed signature/moniker of Basquiat. The unframed sheet measures approximately 11 x 15 inches. It is based on the original 72 x 60-inch acrylic, oil stick and spray paint on canvas that the artist created in 1982 and sold in 2007 for $3,789,693 at Sotheby’s London. Depicted is an early image of one of Basquiat’s recurring motifs -the skull, this one in 3/4 view. The neo-expressionist work also contains a femur bone indicative of the artist’s fascination with anatomy, a laurel crown, balancing scales representing justice and equality, and a primitive arrow or spear representing savagery, all in stark white or vibrant color against the black background.
